What expiration and historical status mean
Keep expired and superseded records searchable without presenting them as current.
Historical does not mean useless
An expired, superseded, archived, denied, or revoked official record can answer an exact-number question from an older permit file, installed product, specification, or document set. Deleting it removes important context.
Status must come from the source
A catalog may display a normalized historical badge only beside the raw official value and mapping version. It should not calculate expired from a date when the source supplies a conflicting status, and it should never change status because the source was temporarily unavailable.
Show replacement evidence carefully
A newer record should be linked only when the official result or document explicitly identifies the relationship. Number similarity is not sufficient.
- Preserve the historical URL.
- Show the raw status prominently.
- Retain stated dates separately.
- Link the replacement only with evidence.
- Ask the AHJ about project-specific use.
